Today, a deceased great, the first man to play live in prison, in music gets his day in the sun.
Jonny Cash needs no introduction. A man who’s music career featured a first album in 1957, Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar and finished only a couple of years ago, he’s inspired guitarists, their parents, and their parents too.
Hurt is a song originally played and performed by Nine Inch Nails. According to http://genius.com/Johnny-cash-hurt-lyrics, it was Rick Rubin who turned Cash to this song. Cash lent the tune his deep, gravelly voice filled with an angst that doesn’t spring from teenage rage.
Some say it’s about self-harm, others drugs, others that he meant it for the sheer amount of loss he’d experienced in his life.
Whatever you might say it’s about, Cash’s rendition drips with a life of pain and beauty.
